A common misconception is that a queen named Sheba existed. A place known as Sheba exists. It is speculated that the areas now known as Northern Tigray and Eritrea, once called Saba, is the geographical location biblical Sheba is likely to have been located. A queen named Makeda once ruled these lands famous for their richness in gold, jewels and spices. The throne of Sheba is at Axum in modern day Ethiopia in what was an empire stretching across modern day East Africa, across the Nile all the way to Yemen. Often referred to as Queen Sheba, the Queen Makeda of Sheba is one of the more memorable yet obscure female historical icons.
Even an obviously epic queen’s entire legacy is reduced to her interactions with a man, albeit an extremely exceptional one.
