In war there are no unwounded soldiers

by June 9, 2023
2 mins read

Battles and fights have been ingrained in our DNA for as long as we have existed, whether they are internal or external, there has always been the need to fight and when our own will does meet this reality, we open up new frontiers within ourselves and surroundings. To observe the topic objectively we can identify the truth that all wars must bear the fruit of injury –how we choose to view the pain of battle becomes the real question. Wounds rarely heal without the initial pain of being revealed, and in the same breath one does not grown without first weeding out the uncomfortable truths of themselves that they might be too scared to know. Whether in personal or professional situations, the reigning truth of discomfort in battles will always exist.

Fear of the unknown possibilities can be more frightening than the fear of the known realities.

An isolated case of a not so isolated isolation; The platonic relationships of African men

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com July 22, 2022
2 mins read

The snow leopard and polar bear have never looked at their surroundings as cold, nor have the two neighbours living in similar conditions looked at the objectivity of their situations. In this investigation, a hypothetical scenario informed by a number of real occurrences allows us to dive into the platonic relationship(s) between modern African men.

It was a different time, as far as we were concerned, if you had food, clothes, and your old man was home more nights than he was out in the week, my guy, you were loved.

A Playlist 4 Gava

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com April 22, 2022

Dear Gava,

It’s me again! You know the one the universe has decided to punish with Kenyan citizenship.

I’d like to ask how you’re doing gava but I can see unaglow! Wah, I haven’t seen you this happy since your office holders were last campaigning! Or yesterday, AKA the last time you decided to find a new way to make our lives hell. This year, like most election years, you have found a way to do it all, campaign and make living in this country significantly worse than the year before. How do you do it gava?

Since we’re breaking up gava, it’s only right that I create a playlist with an explanation of why I selected each song in correlation to how badly you have treated me!

Bad Girls Wear What They Want; Visual Creatures Must Mind Their Business

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com February 25, 2022

Ever since I came across the concept of contributory negligence I loved the pure rationality of being able to partially attribute responsibility for harm done to the victim of the harm. In Swahili, the saying goes “msiba wa kujitakia”, a problem of your own creation. As satisfying as the concept is in the quest for justice, rarely is it more misused than when it comes to modesty culture.  Like anything cultural, modesty is a contextual and malleable ideation – especially related to dressing and deportment in a way that actively avoids the encouraging of sexual attraction in others.

The same society that will make pre-pubescent girl children cover up because their uncles and brothers are around. Is that not a form of madness in itself?

Total Drama 254

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com February 4, 2022

Hello and welcome back to season 59 of “season 59 of Total Drama 254.” I’m your host, long-suffering Kenyan, and we can’t wait to delve into this season of election intrigues and other peculiarities.

This season promises to be exciting, full of surprises, backstabbing and all the things we have come to expect from Kenyan politics and politicians. The writers have managed to create a season that will simultaneously be unlike and like all previous seasons.

Don’t believe me? Here is a look at what we can expect from this season based on the shenanigans that took place in the 7 long weeks of January.

Forget implementing a widespread public health campaign debunking vaccine myths, easing fears, and telling people where they can get the vaccines and at what time, the government is sticking to its motto of by fire, by force.

The Burden of the Politically Apathetic

The Burden of the Politically Apathetic

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com January 21, 2022

I’m really over the phrase “I don’t care about/like politics”. We’ve all heard someone around us say it or said it ourselves. Let me just get my unpopular take out of the way now so that you can get off at the next stop if you’re pressed – disinterest in politics is lazy, unnatural and shock on many, not a personality trait. Don’t get me wrong, politicking in our context especially, can be predictably draining and perceivably futile. Yet somehow, no society we are aware of has escaped the grip of politics – so what exactly are politics and what role do they play for humankind?

Political apathy is the equivalent of knowing a rat has died in your home, smelling the rotting rat but doing nothing about it except using air freshener and nose plugs because there will be more rats and they will die too.

A Woman’s Worth (Legislature Remix)

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com December 9, 2021

When the Kenyan populace decided to adopt a new Constitution in 2010, it came with the requirement to elect forty-seven women into Parliament each representing a county and with the same responsibilities as any other member of parliament. This addition to the members of our legislature was one of the most highly contested elements of our constitutional process leading up to the bananas and oranges referendum. The resulting role of Women’s Representative remains shrouded in debate over its purpose and general usefulness.

Contrary to popular belief, your Women’s Rep delivering bales of sanitary towels to girl’s schools or organizing sexual health trainings is not doing their job.

The Youth Have Something To Say: The Youth Factor

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com October 15, 2021

Psssst politicians and media,

Can I ask you a question?

Do you know any young people?

I only ask because young people are often painted as though we have landed from mars demanding to be ferried by flying cars to our palatial mansions in Kitisuru. We are somehow the problem and the solution. The allegedly lazy generation who complains about everything while waiting for things to be handed to us and will squander it all by voting in the wrong people. As if the adultier adults have not been doing all these before we were of voting age.

My concern with the coverage of youth and young people is that conversations are often had about, around, and without us.

Make it make sense

Make It Make Sense Fellow Kenyans

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com October 1, 2021

Fellow Kenyans,

The time when politicians promises are sweeter, their political jabs are faster and wittier, and the pep in their step is discernible is upon us. It is unofficially officially election season.

Kenyan politicians are cursed with the unfortunate luck of never knowing the campaign period is over. As such, Kenyans have had the extreme displeasure of living through a never-ending election cycle, particularly in the past four years. We went from the 2017 elections and re-run into the BBI process. Just as we are emerging from that, we are being thrust into another election period.

Ensure that you have a manifesto but as mentioned above, make sure that these are just political statements that can be gently massaged away or replaced with an even larger promise that you won’t fulfil.

White Wash(wash)ed and Muzzled

by zeekatamadesigns@gmail.com September 15, 2021

Edgar Obare is a name the Internet streets know and love, or love to hate. For all the pop-culture illiterates (myself included), here’s a little crash course on what the self-proclaimed tea-master does and why he is our muse for this article: the Instagram story is a lapsing twenty-four hour record of whatever you want to post, and Edgar Obare has chosen to spill the tea. Channeling anonymous tips from the online masses on the activities, scandals and whereabouts of both influential and ordinary Kenyans, he has been able to piece together many a web space mystery, unleashing career ending or relevance propelling receipts to keep his large following hooked and tipping.

Edgar Obare’s plight leaves a dull ache in my brain because it exposes the underbelly of our society.
